"LYMEC CALLS FOR DEMOCRACY IN BELARUS"
European Liberal Youth - LYMEC - condemns the decision of the Belarussianregime to expell a LYMEC member from Venstres Ungdom (Denmark) onWednesday and to deny entry to half of its election team. The 15 strongteam had been due to conduct exit-polling and the decision can onlyindicate that the Lukashenko regime wants to avoid international scrutinyand supress democratic opposition. Recent days have seen as series ofarrests, expulsions and a pattern of intimidation. The young liberal activists currently gathered in Kiev, Ukraine, willcontinue their protest against the unfair electoral process and in supportof the Opposition Bloc. LYMEC and Moloda PORA (in the process of becominga member of the European liberal family), are organising public action: - on Friday 17 march, hundreds of lights will be lit in windows as asymbol of our awareness of the political situation in Belarus - on Saturday 18 march, activists will break a symbolic door in front ofthe Belarussian embassy in Kiev, as a symbol of our wish to open Belarusborders to the world - and on Sunday 19 march (election day), activists will wash theBelarussian embassy building as a symbol of our commitment to fightcorruption and to clean the regime of dictatorship Pietro Paganini, LYMEC Vice-President said: ''It is already clear todaythat these elections will be neither free nor fair. We have two memberorganisations in Belarus and we will continue our fight for democracy. Weset out to observe elections in order to guarantee a fair outcome but theregime refuses to be subject to the basic standards that all truedemocracies subscribe to. We are actively pursuing other methods ofsupporting democracy in Belarus''. Stanislav Kucenko, Leader of Moloda PORA Council said: ''Journalists fromall the main Ukrainian media have been expelled from the country, as wellas the leader of our mother-party, Vladislav Kaskiv. It is obvious that weare not welcome there. We have been at the avant-garde of the Orangerevolution, and ''Luka'' now wants to prevent any spillover to Belarus. But we will continue our actions against corruption and in favour ofdemocracy and human rights in the region. We have already asked theUkrainian Government to provide support to arriving political refugees''.
